Beginning in the late 1800s, Michigan
built a national reputation for leadership in conservation and
environmental protection. During the 1990s, state policies often
departed from that tradition and betrayed the obligation of
public officials to protect the air, water, land and other natural
resources for this and future generations. Now citizens have
a chance to insist that the Governor, legislators and appointed
officials in state government rise to the challenge. MEC has
launched an environmental history project to tell the story
of Michigan's past environmental leadership and to inspire a
new generation of Michigan citizens.
