LAND STEWARDSHIP

Prime time to trust

This meandering creek and adjacent farmland was protected by a conservation-minded Washtenaw County family last year through a conservation agreement. And 2007 could be an especially attractive year for tax savings and land protection through such agreements. Landowners who act before Dec. 31, 2007, have a rare opportunity to protect land permanently and save significantly on federal taxes.  By donating a conservation agreement or a portion of land to a qualified land trust or conservancy, landowners may be able to take advantage of generous new income tax incentives for conservation—and now is the time to start the process.  For more information, contact the Washtenaw Land Trust (serving Washtenaw, Jackson and Ingham counties) at (734) 302-5263; info@washtenawlandtrust.org. To find a land trust near you, visit www.lta.org.
