LAND STEWARDSHIP
A
recall connection
to Sibley Prairie
By Suzanne

Sibley
Prairie Complex, totaling approximately 700 acres, is
the largest remnant of lake plain prairie and oak savanna
ecosystems left in Michigan. Located in Brownstown Township
in Wayne County, and primarily owned by Fritz Enterprises,
the prairie complex has been subject to heavy development
pressure. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
and the township government have rejected several development
proposals proffered by Fritz because the proposals would
destroy the rare ecological features of the prairie
complex.
The rejection of these developments has been a political
hot button in the township for years. In February 2006,
a recall election targeted two Brownstown Township officials,
who are considered to be against development in the
prairie complex. The recall petitions were largely based
on claims that the officials voted to switch the township
lawyer without soliciting bids. Full disclosure of contributors
to the recall campaign showed that Eric Fritz of Fritz
Enterprises was the majority contributor.
Though the two officials were not recalled, some area
citizens are upset with the lack of information behind
the recall. Speculation is that Fritz wanted to shift
the balance of power to those who would be in favor
of development. Overall, the Sibley Prairie Complex
is in dire need of conservation efforts.
