2003 "Picture the Solution" winners capture hope in a camera lens

To help raise awareness of environmental problems and possible solutions, MEC and the Detroit Free Press cosponsor an annual photo essay contest. Participants are asked to find and photograph innovative solutions to environmental problems in their communities that help to make the world a better, cleaner and healthier place to live.

The 2003 "Picture the Solution" photo and essay contest winners were honored at a reception on June 4 at the Environmental Interpretive Center on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus. Winners received cash prizes and the Barbara Stanton Environmental Award of Excellence, named for the retired veteran Free Press editorial writer, Barbara Stanton. According to the Free Press, Stanton "showed why many young people choose journalism as a career-to make a difference."

Each contest entry is a testament to the people of Michigan and their deep and abiding desire to protect the state's natural beauty and ecological health.

The range of contest photos reflects a reassuring consciousness that crosses ages, races and genders and serves as a reminder to each of us to think each day about not only the needs of this generation, but of those that will follow us.
