On the Brink early reviews are in

Early response to MEC Senior Policy Advisor Dave Dempsey's latest book, On the Brink: The Great Lakes in the 20th Century, note the book's importance to recording the Great Lakes' environmental history. Here's what two Michigan publication editors had to say:

"Now rides forth a Paul Revere of the Great Lakes-an environmental patriot and craftsman sounding alarms about 21st century threats to our majestic ecosystem (a word not in play in Revere's day).

"Revere captured 1770s battles on copper engravings. Dave Dempsey chronicles current battles with skillfully crafted books that draw on the past for lessons to be heeded by today's politicians."

-George Weeks, The Detroit News, April 25, 2004

"Summarizing a history of the Great Lakes' environmental exploitation and gradual recovery, and blending in thoughts on the poetry, folklore, inspiration derived from the Great Lakes as well as citizen action to preserve them, On The Brink brings true environmental history to life in an exciting manner that challenges the reader to get involved and join the fight to protect a national treasure."

-Midwest Book Review, June 7, 2004

"It is this combined focus that makes Dempsey's new book as important as his Ruin and Recovery: Michigan's Rise as a Conservation Leader, published in 200l by the University of Michigan. On the Brink, new this year from Michigan State University Press, provides a resilient and expansive framework on which to hang a growing environmental consciousness-and conscience-about these five spectacular inland seas."

-Loraine Anderson, Traverse City Record Eagle, June 13, 2004
