MEC's annual fundraising event on October 16 passed every measure of success with flying colors.

The celebration drew a wide variety of people from different backgrounds who share an interest in the environment. The affair raised over $100,000 to help MEC protect Michigan's environment and had over 100 sponsors.

In a room full of diverse advocates for a sustainable future, attendees drew inspiration from the 2002 event honorees. Peter Wege received the Helen and William Milliken Distinguished Service Award. Wege, known for his steadfast commitment to environmental causes, has made highly-regarded contributions to understanding the positive relationship between business and ecology-best represented through his book, Economocology.

Alison and David Swan won the Petoskey Prize for creating and leading a grassroots movement to stop a proposed water treatment facility and easement through the majestic Saugatuck Dunes State Park. MEC was especially impressed with the Swans' leadership in quickly pulling together 600 people who made the fight impossible for lakeshore citizens and politicians to ignore.
