PURPOSE
Founded in 1980,
MEC is a coalition of over 60 environmental, public health, and faith-based
organizations with nearly 200,000 individual members. For over
20 years, MEC has provided a voice at the State Capitol. In addition
to serving as a clearinghouse of environmental information, MEC develops
public policy, educates elected officials and the public, and provides
training and support to member organizations.

What
is the Energy Star program?
ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program helping businesses
and individuals save money and protect the environment
through superior energy efficiency. Products that have
earned the ENERGY STAR label have met strict energy efficiency
standards set by U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE.
Look
for the familiar ENERGY STAR logo when making your next
purchase!

Appliances: Clothes washers, refrigerators, dishwashers
Heating and cooling: Furnaces, air conditioners,
programmable thermostats
Lighting: Compact fluorescents, light fixtures,
ceiling fans
Office equipment: Computers, copiers, fax machines
Home electronics: DVD products, televisions,
cordless phones
Did you know…?
1. The average household spends $1,400 each year on
energy bills. By selecting ENERGY STAR qualified products
you can cut usage by up to 30%, saving more than $400
each year.
2. The average home is responsible for more air pollution
than the average car.
3. In 2003 alone, Americans-with the help of ENERGY
STAR-prevented greenhouse gases equivalent to those
of 18 million cars, saved enough energy to power 20
million homes and saved $9 billion in energy costs.
MEC
operates our ENERGY STAR program in part under a contract
with the Small Business Association of Michigan, ENERGY
STAR Promotion Project.
