ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

Media matters

QUESTION: Newspaper and TV never cover the important environmental issues my organization pitches to them. Am I doing something wrong? Or should I assume they're just more interested in Angelina and Brad's bratty baby?

ANSWER: Not necessarily, on both counts. The process by which newspapers and TV stations choose stories is imperfect, chaotic and subject to an avalanche of uncontrollable variables. Whether or not your story gets covered often has more to do with dumb luck and timing than the merit of the story. Keep cultivating media sources. And keep making your calls and sending your releases. Even the most enviro-unfriendly media outlet eventually will have a crisis that will make the arrival of your press release seem like a godsend. (It would also help if you could get Brad Pitt to appear at your press conference.)
