LaborFest
celebrates labor's heritage
and protecting the future
By
Michele Scarborough, Member Services Director

MEC was present at the annual LaborFest celebration
at Ford Field in Detroit in September. The Michigan
State AFL-CIO sponsored this annual celebration of labor's
heritage. LaborFest at Ford Field replaced the traditional
AFL-CIO sponsored Labor Day parade in Detroit.
"This is a new approach and an exciting new way
for working families to celebrate our heritage, show
our strength and protect our future," said Mark
Gaffney, president of the Michigan State AFL-CIO.
The event focused on issues of vital concern to working
families. Joining union members in the celebration were
many friends of labor, including several elected federal,
state and city officials and organizations that support
labor's principles. Governor Jennifer Granholm and UAW
President Ron Gettelfinger also spoke at the event.
Fair trade was also on the agenda at LaborFest. Participants
had a chance to sign the world's largest postcard, a
giant statement against the Free Trade Area of the Americas
(FTAA). The postcard will be delivered to trade ministers
from North, Central and South America who will meet
in Miami this coming November.
"Teamsters and turtles are together again,"
said Lana Pollack, MEC President. "We're proud
to stand with all of our friends in organized labor
against fair trade agreements, which threaten workers
and the environment."
