U-M study says fuel economy equals profits for Big Three

Domestic automakers could increase profits by raising fuel economy across all model lines, according to a new study by the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute.

The Big Three would need to go beyond current federal fuel economy standards, even if gas prices drop. But they could do that by simply incorporating existing technology into their current vehicle mix. Assuming gas at $3.10 per gallon, the Big Three could collectively increase profits by $2 billion and save nearly 35,000 jobs, according to the study. Find it at www.osat.umich.edu.
