ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Michigan Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides launches two campaigns

Efforts take aim at pesticide poisons

The Michigan Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides (MCAP) has launched two campaigns for the coming year that focus on minimizing childhood pesticide exposures in and around schools and on lawns and playing fields. Lead by MEC’s Children’s Environmental Health program, MCAP advocates for a less toxic approach to control insects, weeds and other undesirables for the sake of higher IQs, stronger lungs and healthy kids.

The ‘Schools’ campaign highlights the connection between pesticide use, asthma and learning disabilities. MCAP works closely with Beyond Pesticides in Washington DC and supports its “Proclamation for the Protection of Schoolchildren from Pests and Pesticides.” To sign this proclamation and support the reduction and elimination of pests and pesticides in schools, visit their web site at www.beyondpesticides.org/toxicfreeschools/action.htm.

MCAP’s ‘Lawns’ campaign is positioning itself to impact the high level of pesticide use on lawns and landscapes and protect Michigan’s children. If this past summer had you stewing indoors because of the pesticide drift from your neighbor’s yard, or if you’d like to learn more about the detrimental effects of pesticides along with healthy alternatives, visit and sign the “National Declaration on the Use of Toxic Lawn Pesticides” at www.beyondpesticides.org/pesticidefreelawns/declaration/index.htm.
