LAND STEWARDSHIP

LAND USE ISSUES

Pipes and Pavement
The uncoordinated state level land use policy and planning results in a disjointed approach to planning that renders many Michigan communities powerless to deal with sprawl. State policies should be coordinated and analyzed for their impact on local development patterns.

Great Places by Design
Michigan is often characterized by a lack of coordination in regard to land use planning and policy. This lack of cohesiveness often leads to costly duplication of services and investments while posing an incredible challenge for a state that relies heavily on its natural resource base for economic enhancement and stability.
Cool Cities
“Cool Cities” is about rethinking the way we choose to live, and putting a stop to urban flight once and for all. Cities and towns across Michigan’s can be great places to live, and by supporting redevelopment in existing areas, we can reverse the trend. Cities offer us what no cookie-cutter housing and shopping centers plopped into cornfields ever will: a sense of history, aesthetics and community.

People and the Land
Michigan has been losing acres of open space to development each day, and unless that changes, our days as an agricultural and recreation state are numbered. Sprawling development, which consumes land at a rate far beyond our population needs, has converted thousands of acres of Michigan land which would have been better suited to farming, forestry, or tourism.
