Are you concerned about the protection and enhancement of Michigan’s air, water and land but don’t have much time to take action? Do you feel your efforts could be more effective and part of a strategic plan? Are you looking for another means to have your voice heard?

The Michigan Environmental Council (MEC), Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC), National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters have initiated the Michigan Action Project (MAP), an electronic rapid response system, to enhance communication with key state and federal officials and business leaders. All you need is an E-mail address!

It’s simple. MAP will send you occasional notices of critical environmental issues - about ten or twelve times a year. After you download and read MAP’s short description of a state or federal environmental issue, you can personalize our preaddressed sample letter. MAP will then convert your response to a facsimile and fax your letter to the appropriate policy maker or opinion leader.

The MAP system gives you two ways to respond: via regular e-mail or through our new web-based "Action Network" system. MAP alerts, which will always be e-mailed to you, will contain a link to a "Take Action" page on your personal Action Network workspace. You do not need to use the new web-based system if you are more comfortable responding via e-mail. Either way your letters will be faxed to key decision-makers.

Feedback will be provided with results of your efforts. For example, we described to past participants how their action on the "Clean Michigan Initiative" alert helped to change the bond package from an industrial development bond to a true environmental bond. The participation of concerned citizens was also helpful in defeating federal "takings" legislation that would have weakened state and local governments’ capacity to protect environmental and public health.

Here’s what Michigan citizens have to say about MAP:

  • "Thank you for all your efforts - it's really nice to have this opportunity to get involved made so easy!"
  • "Following the last round of letters, I received a reply from [Rep.] Joe Young, Jr. explaining how the vote went. Good to have this [form of] communication."
  • "Thanks for the update. It's good to know that our efforts have paid off!"

To get connected to MAP, please complete and submit the form below:

Once you are registered can access your own MAP workspace at http://map.e-actionmax.com/. Please submit your email address where it asks registered activists to sign in. The system will then ask for your password. If you have not yet created a password, as would be the case if you register using Form 1, just hit "submit" and create in the "Your Workspace" page that follows. If you forget your password, the system will promptly e-mail it to you.

You will be emailed your first alert soon. Check out your workspace to see what alerts are open, to find out who your legislators are, to change your contact information and more. If you have questions, please call James Clift at (517) 487-9539.
